ABOUT ART PAXTON

Arthur Paxton is an experienced photographer based in Montclair, New Jersey.

People photography remains an engaging challenge. In addition to portraiture (especially location work) Art excels in corporate and editorial photography with experience in financial services, technology, health, higher education, music, architecture and digital photo-illustration. Art’s work is marked by a strong sense of design and a nuanced eye for light. Art's wide interests help insure connections with his subjects. Indeed, A Paxton portrait shows the individual looking vital and connected (unless the subject is a rock muscian who needs to look alienated and dissolute). Art approaches a location shoot prepared for a challenge, and open to the unexpected. His responsiveness and creativity make for enjoyable, productive collaborations.

Paxton holds degrees from the University of Virginia, S.U.N.Y. Stony Brook, and Columbia University where he received a doctoral degree in music composition. His book Making Music, a photo essay on the creative process in music, with David Amram as the composer/conductor was published by Atheneum/Macmillan in 1986. Having lived in such diverse places as London, Panama, Montana, and Manhattan, Paxton has made Montclair, NJ his home for two decades.
